Are You at Risk? Know the Warning Signs and Symptoms of Prediabetes

15 Jul, 2024

India has one of the highest numbers of people with prediabetes globally. Studies suggest that around 8-10% of the adult population in India has prediabetes.

Prediabetes is a critical health condition that often precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes. Characterized by elevated blood sugar levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes, prediabetes is a warning sign that individuals need to take action to prevent the progression to full-blown diabetes.

Understanding the signs and symptoms of prediabetes is essential for early detection and intervention, which can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes and its associated complications.

6 Signs and Symptoms of Prediabetes:

  1. Increased Thirst and Urination: Individuals may experience frequent thirst and urination, similar to those with diabetes, as the body tries to eliminate excess sugar through urine.
  2. Fatigue: Feeling tired or lacking energy, even after adequate rest, can be a symptom of prediabetes.
  3. Increased Hunger: Cravings for food or feeling hungry shortly after eating can indicate issues with insulin regulation.
  4. Blurred Vision: Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect vision, causing temporary blurriness.
  5. Slow Healing: Wounds, cuts, or bruises that take longer than usual to heal may be a sign of impaired blood circulation due to high blood sugar levels.
  6. Darkened Skin Patches: Known as acanthosis nigricans, darkened patches of skin, particularly around the neck or armpits, can occur in people with insulin resistance.

Early detection and management of prediabetes are crucial in preventing the progression to type 2 diabetes and reducing the risk of associated complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems. By recognizing the signs and symptoms of prediabetes, individuals can take proactive steps such as adopting a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight to improve insulin sensitivity and prevent the development of diabetes. Regular medical check-ups and screenings are essential for those at risk or displaying symptoms of prediabetes, ensuring timely intervention and improved long-term health outcomes.
